 CST 300 First Week Journal

OLI Pre-test/Module #1    

    These assignments made me think about how important it is for groups to work well together. There was a question during the pretest that asked for the top three factors that make an effective team. I chose creativity, structured roles and meetings, and equal participation. The Pre-test also presented certain situations and responses which was good practice for thinking about how to successfully navigate tough moments.

Module 1 Intro

    Our Module 1 Intro went over plagiarism, citing sources, paraphrasing/quoting, and the APA format that we will be using throughout this class. We were given a brief overview of what the outline for our Industry Analysis paper will look like. Professor Tao made a video introducing us to the class highlighting the importance of this class, what to expect, and some tips for doing well in the class.

Module 1 Lecture

    Our Module 1 Lecture contained the history of CSUMB (formerly an army base), the vision of CSUMB (community of learning and teaching each other, consideration towards others, and striving for greatness), and information about the SCD (School of Computing & Design) department. We watched a video that listed strategies for online learning success (1. read the syllabus, 2. plan your study time, 3. participate, and 4. collaborate).

Module 1 Writing Lab

    Our writing lab this week goes over the Industry Analysis Essay that we will be working on. There is information on APA formatting, citations, how to do our outline that is due at the end of this week, as well as the instructions/specifications for the final paper. We will be researching an industry that we are interested in pursuing a career in. This is a good way for us to prepare ourselves for what lies ahead in our professional lives.

CST 300 Second Week Journal

 CST 300 Second Week Journal OLI Module #2     These assignments taught me about the reality and importance of collective intelligence. Often it is assumed that individual intelligence (IQ) is a major factor in a team's success. However, it seems that IQ has little to do with the success of a team. I learned that woman score higher on tests regarding social perceptiveness, an ability to pick up on subtle, nonverbal cues from other people. The three factors that create an effective team are high social sensitivity, equal participation, and having more women than men. The NY Times article titled "What Google Learned From Its Quest to Build the Perfect Team" was a great read that shared a story that exemplified the findings of the data. The data showed that social sensitivity in teams are what make them great. The videos from OLI with Jesse and Jenny describe the value of having a good team, what a good team looks like, and what it means to be a good team player. Module #2 L
